WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN DISASTER STRIKES.

Fire and Smoke Damage

DO:
Call Able immediately for board-up or other post-emergency services
Open windows for ventilation
Blow or brush-vacuum loose smoke particles from upholstery, draperies and    carpeting
Place towels or old blankets on carpet traffic areas
Clean and protect chrome trim on kitchen appliances and bathroom faucets    with a light coating of oil or petroleum jelly
If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open
Change HVAC filter
Tape cheesecloth over air vents

DO NOT:
Wipe or wash walls, ceilings or other absorbent surfaces
Use TVs, stereos, computers or electrical appliances until cleaned and checked
Turn on ceiling fans. Wiring may be wet or damaged
Use canned or packaged food or beverages exposed to excessive heat
Send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning could set smoke    odor

Water Damage

DO:
Call Able immediately for water extraction
Remove excess water by mopping
Wipe water from wood furniture
Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying
Eliminate wood stains on carpeting by placing aluminum foil, plates or tile    under furniture legs
Turn on air conditioning in summer and open windows in winter to expedite    drying

DO NOT:
Leave wet draperies hanging. Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately    at room temperature
Leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors
Use appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors — especially not on    concrete floors

Soot Damage

DO:
Call Able immediately to remove harmful soot residue
Change furnace filter
Cover upholstery with clean sheets during cleanup
Tape cheesecloth over air vents
Blow or brush-vacuum loose smoke particles from upholstery, draperies and    carpeting

DO NOT:
Attempt to clean walls or ceilings
Use do-it-yourself home carpet or upholstery cleaners

Vandalism Damage

DO:
Hose down or wash egg residue from building exterior
Wipe up spilled food from carpets and fabrics with a dampened cloth or sponge
Blot liquids and juices
Vacuum glass particles from carpets and upholstery
Save containers that list composition of spilled inks, cosmetics and paints

DO NOT:
Attempt to remove ink, paint or cosmetic stains
Operate damaged appliances
Throw away broken pieces of furniture, porcelain or other art objects
(Many pieces can be restored to their original beauty.)

Harmful Waste

DO:
Call Able immediately for biohazard cleanup and removal
Turn off the HVAC system if there is sewage damage
Get children and pets out of building

DO NOT:
Attempt any type of cleanup
Touch anything that might be contaminated
Eat, drink, smoke or handle contact lenses in affected areas
OSHA recommends a post-exposure medical evaluation for anyone who comes    in contact with harmful waste. Consult your physician for details
